International Podcast Day

My close friends and family know how much I love a good podcast because I talk about them constantly. From news to health to technology  to pop culture, my interest run the gamut. One specific kind of podcast I really enjoy  is on the writing  craft and ways to enhance my freelance career. In celebration of International Podcast Day, which is Saturday, September 30, I’m sharing my favorite writing podcasts.

These 5 podcasts have proven helpful to me. I learn  interesting writing tips and stay current on industry trends. I also  stay encouraged as I slog through the ups and downs of freelance writing. Some of these episodes are created by other writers who understand  what it takes to be a successful writer.

My 5 Writing Podcasts

1. The Blogging Millionaire

Brandon Gaille hosts and teaches the latest traffic building and income-boosting growth hacks to take your blog to the next level. He shares how  his SEO tactics gets him 5 million monthly visitors from over 100,000 first page Google rankings.

I am not at his level of Google rankings, but I have learned so many tips and tricks on how to get my blog more engagement and traffic. A valuable tip  was on how to write better titles/headlines for blog posts. Asking a question, using numbers or the current year in your headline are all ways your post can get better exposure and click throughs. I also learned the importance of headings and images in a blog post. So, now I  have headings and images not only at the top of my posts but throughout.

2. Grammar Girl

Mignon Fogarty hosts this podcast and is the founder of the Quick and Dirty Tips podcast network. This podcast provides short friendly tips to improve your writing and feed your love of the English language. These grammar, punctuation, style and business tips will make you a better  and more successful writer.

I know good grammar is essential to good writing. This podcast  has been wonderful for me in clarifying grammar rules, using proper punctuation and understanding the history of  the English language. Not only do I listen to the weekly podcast but follow Grammar Girl on LinkedIn.

3. Freelance Writing Coach

Kaleigh Moore and Emma Siemasko are two full-time freelance writers who host this 20-minute podcast. They provide actionable advice and firsthand insights from their 10+ years freelancing.

This is a new podcast I started listening to recently. I like their deep dive into the freelance writing life from a personal perspective. One episode that stands out was on  Chat GPT and its impact on  freelancers. They shared worries and concerns  about AI encroaching on freelance writing but added some positive  reflections on how it can be used to their advantage.

4. Merriam-Webster Word of the Day

Learn a new word everyday. From the fun and familiar to the strange and obscure, this podcast  has you covered. Each episode is short but packed with  information about words. You  learn the spelling and history along with hearing the word in a sentence.

This podcast has exposed me to so many new and different words. I especially like  learning how to spell the word because the English language  can be confusing with spelling verses pronunciation. Since becoming a blind freelance writer , I have noticed how Many words sound the same but spelled differently. Plus the background and history of the word are insightful while enhancing  my comprehension. If you are a true wordsmith this podcast is worth a listen.

5. The Writing Coach Podcast

Rebecca L. Weber is a writing coach and freelance journalist who hosts this podcast. She coaches listeners with her sustainable strategies, mindset shifts and creative skills development she uses to help independent writers around the world. I started listening this week and have already benefitted. Her  latest episode  discussed how routines and rituals  help your writing process. As I scrolled through  the interesting previous episodes, I am excited to here what new and  meaningful ways I can improve my writing and freelance career.
