National Give Something Away Day
I am sure you have heard the saying, “it’s Christmas in July”, right? Well, I am not referring to going shopping or adorning the house with Christmas trees and other decorations. Rather, it is the Christmas spirit I am referring to. During the holiday season people are inspired and motivated to give gifts of their time in volunteering and money in donations. People rush around trying to find that “perfect gift” for a friend, loved one or colleague. But why wait until Christmas when you can give now? Today is National Give Something Away Day and an excellent opportunity to give and think of others. You don’t have to spend a lot of money. You don’t have to even leave your house. Just go to your closet or walk through your home or apartment and look at all the things you don’t need or use anymore. It is time to do the Marie Kondo method. It is time to declutter your space and find a happy home for those items you no longer need. Believe me someone will appreciate your generosity.

Giving Things Away is Routine
Every year I do this ritual to keep my home from becoming too full of stuff. If it doesn’t spark joy, then it must go. If I am not using it and haven’t for a long time, then it must go. If I think someone else can benefit more, then it must go. So, today is my day to clear out my closet. Gently worn blouses, pants, skirts and blazers along with dress shoes can be donated to my local charity. I have been doing this even more so, now that I work from home and don’t need a full business wardrobe. I also rummage through my household items and donate pillows, bed sheets, kitchen utensils and other home essentials. In the past I have even given away small pieces of furniture and electronics.

I work with a local charity that will pick up directly from my front door. So, I just make a simple phone call and schedule a date that works best. I leave the items at the front door and they leave me a receipt. It is just that easy.
Now, it’s your turn. I encourage you to do it too. There is always a way to give back to your local community. Use this day of giving something away to stretch yourself, think of others and create positive change.
Just got back from an “Antique Faire” and I am still amazed at some of the stuff people will pay $ for especially given that I am in the process of removing a lot of the same type of stuff from my mom’s house and my biggest concern was trying to figure out how to get rid of it! Luckily, someone my neighbor knows came to take everything off my hands after we offered it to him for free. I think they are well aware that there are people like those I saw today who are willing to pay for it though I was at the point where I was willing to pay someone to haul it away for me! SMH!
